Pastor - Nanette Cagney
Nanette Cagney was born in Norfolk, Virginia, into a career military family. Her father was in the Navy, so she lived in several states growing up including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Hawaii, Virginia and South Carolina. She began her college experience at the College of Charleston, in Charleston, South Carolina, but she transferred her junior year to Loyola University, New Orleans. She graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work and she worked primarily in psychiatric social work. Nanette worked with emotionally disturbed adolescents through Catholic Charities in New Orleans, and in the VA psychiatric hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. She also worked for the welfare department in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
Wanting to further her education, she attended Tulane law school and graduated in 1982. She worked in the oil industry and then had a small law firm in Lafayette, Louisiana, before moving to Lake Charles in 1991 to work in the federal court.
Nanette has been involved in leadership positions in various churches for many years. She was first licensed to preach in another denomination in 1982. She began doing pulpit supply in the PCUSA in 2001. She was ordained an elder at St. Andrew and served on Session prior to becoming commissioned as a Ruling Elder in 2006. Nanette completed three years of courses required to become a commissioned ruling elder through Dubuque Theological Seminary. Nanette served unofficially as the pastor of St. Andrew since the untimely death of our prior pastor in January of 2006 and officially since June, 2006.
Nanette has led many Bible studies over the years including Boundaries, The Rapture Exposed, the Gospel According to Starbucks, Jesus in the Old Testament, and Romans. She currently leads special Lent and Advent adult studies, as well as the Confirmation Class, and Presbyterian Campus Fellowship, our college ministry.
Although an attorney trained in the law, Nanette believes in God’s abundant grace. She believes that one of the best experiences for anyone is the realization of the place and power of grace in each life.
